Open Question: Questions about / guidance on, buying an HDTV? (contrast, refurbished, screen type)?
I'm slowly getting a handle on the absurd amounts of detail one has to learn to intelligently pick out a flat panel, hdtv. My price range is $500 or less, first of all. My viewing habits will have nothing to do with sports, so the motion of plasma is not attractive to me, and I think the screens look horrible. Questions: - Do you agree then that LCD is the best for me? (i hate glare and non-darkness of plasma, will use it mostly for viewing DVDs (not blueray), and tv (not hd, but will possibly buy an hd antenna ). - Sears personnel tells me that buying a $30 HD antenna, (even though I will continue to have Cox cable NOT high def programming), will give the channels the exact same effect - and they will be in HD. Is this true? It sounds suspicious or too good to be true? - I understand that the thing that handles the issue of "how dark will the screen be when it's supposed to be dark, or how detailed will it still be when it is supposed to be semi-dark", is Contrast Ratio. But I understand that dynamic and static contrast ratio are different, yet retailers won't tell you which one they mean. If a Vizio 37" has a 100,000:1 (which sounds real good), but dynamic contrast ratio, is this decent? Is it any better than a 15000:1 static ratio? - will I really need any special cables, if all I have now is NON-hd cable (one coaxial cable), and one dvd player? - is there anything particularly dangerous about getting a refurbished Vizio (saving me $50-$80) at walmart.com ? refurbished, is it worse really? has the same 90 day warranty everything else does, so it appears and I've heard most things go bad in 90 da if they're going to? thoughts?

Open Question: My tv will play CDs just fine, but won't play DVDs?
I've had my tv/dvd combo for many years...So I assume it's starting to fail. :( It won't play DVDs that it played many time before. I put them in and it reads 'no disc.' Doesn't matter what DVD I use. CDs work fine though. Why is that? What's likely the problem?
